Unlike other franchises, like, say, Uncharted, each Mass Effect isn't necessarily a self-contained experience. This trilogy is a confluence of an all-encompassing journey that the player ventures into. So I would suggest starting from the beginning, to create your unique experience that ripples onward to each sequel. After all, ME3 isn't going anywhere, right? But to each his own! This is just my two cents.

I appreciate the input. I heard via an interview with developers that this was the one to go with if you where going to just jump in on one, because it is the most independent of the three.  But I do have the other two installments at my disposal, so I may go ahead and play them first because of this recommendation.
